A different kind of freedom
“I worked in a factory for years,” Marek says, “but it didn’t make me happy. Every day was the same, and that’s just not for me.” As a truck driver, no two days are alike — and that’s exactly what he enjoys about the job. New routes, new people, it’s all part of the experience. “That gives me a sense of freedom.”
At home on every route
What stands out immediately when you ride along with Marek is how social he is. He makes conversation easily, knows everyone in the planning department by name, and greets fellow drivers on the road like old friends. “We’re all out there together, all with the same goal. It’s nice to look out for one another.”
You’d barely notice that Marek is originally from Poland. He’s lived in the Netherlands for years, and his children grew up here. “I moved here for love. That love didn’t last, but I stayed. This is home now.”
Not without challenges
Of course, the job also comes with its share of challenges. Traffic jams, aggressive drivers, long waits — it’s all part of the deal. “Sometimes you’re just stuck on the side of the highway, and all you can do is take a nap or grab something to eat. It is what it is.”
Still, Marek remains calm under pressure. “You can’t control the traffic, so you’re better off not letting it stress you out.”
Italy like the back of his hand
If he could choose where to drive, Marek doesn’t hesitate: Italy. “Calm, courteous drivers, and I know every exit. It almost feels like home.”
Proud of the profession
At the end of the day, after routes through Beringe, Venlo, and Venray, Marek drives back to Tilburg. On the way, he calls home to say he’ll be late for dinner. “My wife’s used to it,” he says with a smile.
What may be invisible to most is just part of daily life for Marek. Being a truck driver is about more than just driving and loading. It’s planning, perseverance, adaptability — and hitting the road with a smile, every single day. And Marek does that like no other.
